Dr Anita Collins introduces our latest publication, ‘Finding our Bass Line’
Our latest publication outlines why Music Education: Right from the Start is focusing on primary classroom music education as its strategic starting point for strengthening music education in Australia.
When we established Music Education: Right from the Start in response to the reality that too many Australian primary students have little or no access to music education, we asked a simple but critical question: where can we create the greatest impact?
As Dr Anita Collins explains, we believe the answer is music education in the primary school classroom:
”This is where lasting change begins,” says our Senior Advisor, “and that’s what Finding Our Bass Line explains.”
Finding our Bass Line sets out why Music Education: Right from the Start is prioritising primary classroom curriculum music as a focus of our efforts to strengthen music education through lasting, system-wide change – towards our goal to ensure every Australian primary school student receives a quality, sequential and ongoing music education.
While both curriculum and co-curricular programs are valuable, only curriculum music guarantees access for every child. Delivered within the school day and aligned to the Australian Curriculum, it is the most equitable and scalable way to ensure all Australian primary students receive a quality music education.
The paper is written for those advising, supporting or collaborating with our national initiative, clarifying our starting point and guiding a shared, consistent approach.
