Music Education:
Right from the Start
A collaborative national initiative, led by Alberts | The Tony Foundation, advocating for universal access to quality, sequential and ongoing music education for all Australian primary school children.
Our Vision
We are driven by our vision that all Australian primary school children need – and have a right to – a quality, sequential and ongoing music education.
The Problem and Opportunities
Beyond its intrinsic value, research shows music education helps address many challenges in Australian primary schools – from boosting literacy and numeracy to supporting wellbeing, inclusion, and student engagement.
Yet many children, particularly those in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, still miss out – despite music being part of the national curriculum. In these challenging times, music education is both an antidote and an educational booster.

Our Collaborative Approach
Music Education: Right from the Start is led by Alberts and The Tony Foundation, but it is owned by many. Grounded in collaboration, the initiative is guided by expert working groups made up of both individuals and representatives of leading organisations across education and training, music education provision, academia and research, philanthropy, and the music industry, all working together to drive meaningful change.
We wish to acknowledge and thank these individuals for their generous contribution of time, expertise, and advice.
We continue to build a collaborative network involving stakeholders across the music education sector who contribute to strategy, policy, research development, and advocacy; teachers’ unions on shared policy goals; and governments and bureaucracies working cooperatively on research partnerships and music education plans. Wherever possible, we seek to work in partnership with government through joint research and the sharing of ideas, information, and resources. If you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you.
